LOWELL SMITH SR. HISTORY CENTER |
The 1914 commercial building at 200 N Main Street in downtown Cleburne was originally a grocery. For many years it served as automobile dealerships. In 1994 the Layland Museum acquired the ideally-located structure for future development.
Today it serves as the Museum's support facility and annex. Rehabilitation, completed in the summer of 2010, returned the building's exterior to its early-20th century appearance. The old dealership showroom is visible from Main Street where now an exhibit of period vehicles, related objects, and neon lighting is a tribute to the building's past. |
|
The Smith building's interior is divided into curatorial services, artifact storage, classroom with teaching kitchen, and the Gillespie Research Library. Both the classroom and library are public-program areas and are not rented.
A schedule of classroom events and demonstrations is organized by the Museum.
Volunteer opportunities include guest teachers, research and curatorial aides.
Please contact the Layland Museum for details. |
